A home for those who don’t know where to start with creating a business website

I am creating this site as a location for me to write up all the knowledge I have about creating a business website using WordPress.  WordPress started in 2003 as a technology for those who wanted to start blogs.  Over the years is has developed and is no longer just a platform or tool for blogging but a full content management solution suitable for all types of websites.  It is now the “largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world, used on millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day”1.

Over the past 10 years as I have been building websites for individuals and businesses I have seen the market change dramatically.  I now build almost all of my websites using WordPress for 3 main reasons:

  1. It is possible for the owners of the website to update the content themselves without me needing to be involved in every step of the process.
  2. WordPress can be customized enough that you can do almost anything you would want to do with it.
  3. It’s FREE – this means that there is a super low barrier to entry for people who want to build a website.

There are other reasons that I use it (security, stability, etc) and there are hosting and domain costs, and paid themes and plugins that you can use if you don’t like the free ones out there, but it makes this way less complicated.  If anything you just read sounds confusing, you are at the right place.  Over the next few weeks I will be defining a simple process that you can follow that will help you to setup your own website for your business.  To make it easy I have picked one trusted solution to recommend for any purchases you have to make.  You are free to pick others as often there are many options but I find that the more choices someone has the more confusing a question becomes.  To be completely transparent some links on the website will be affiliate links which means  I may receive compensation if you purchase something through these links.  I am not recommending any services I do not trust and I am not recommending any services solely for the money I may receive.  Any recommendations are for products or tools that I trust and that I truly believe are essential or will make a difference in your website.

Thank you for your time and trust,

Chris Hess
